On November 9, 2017, a symposium on nuclear science was held at the Carasso Science Park in Be’er Sheva. The symposium was attended by researchers from the Unit of Nuclear Engineering (UNE) at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) and researchers from the Israeli Atomic Energy Commission. This is the third time that such a symposium is being held at the Carasso Science Park, where researchers from UNE/BGU have also participated in the previous two sessions.
The purpose of this symposium, which is open to the general public, is to make the subject of nuclear science more accessible to the public in an attempt to contribute to more knowledgeable and effective public discussions on the subject. For example, in recent years, researchers from UNE/BGU have given several “popular science” seminars on nuclear-related issues such as the Fukushima nuclear accident and the nuclear agreement of the superpowers with Iran.
The main lecture at the symposium was given by Ms. Ella Israeli, a Ph.D candidate at the UNE/BGU under the supervision of Dr. Erez Gilad, the head of the Reactor Physics Research Group. In her lecture, entitled “On the relationship between evolution and nuclear energy”, Ms. Israeli presented different aspects of her research at UNE/BGU, which deals with the development, implementation and application of evolutionary algorithms for the optimization of physical design of the nuclear core, both for nuclear power plants and for research reactors.
